49ers vs. Bengals:Secondary Changes-Smith concussion? CK7 invasion?

Shawntae Spencer Wide receiver Andre Johnson #80 of the Houston Texans completes a 44 yard reception between safety Dashon Goldson #38 and cornerback Shawntae Spencer #36 of the San Francisco 49ers at Reliant Stadium on October 25, 2009 in Houston, Texas.

After getting torched by a man with broken ribs and collapsed lung the 49ers are finally healthy enough to field a full defensive secondary.  The defensive backfield was seen as the most improved group on the 49ers this offseason after the acquistions of Cornerbacks Carlos Rogers, Chris Culliver Safey  Donte Whitner and the surprising return of  S Dashon Goldson.  While Rogers and Whitner have been solid the 49ers have had some trouble at the other CB spot and defacto starting FS Madeui Williams has had his fair share of trouble as well.

“I’m expecting to start,” Goldson said Friday. “I can’t say what I can add, but I know what I can do as a football player. I’m another guy out there that can make things happen and be another force on the defense.”

CB Shawtae Specer who has played sparingly in the first 2 weeks of the season dealing with an injury of his own.  Both Goldson and Spencer have started the last 32 games for the 49ers coming into the season.  It was rumored that Goldson was offered a deal of 5 years with more money than the $20M rewarded to DE Ray Macdonald (nice investment thus far on a side note) by the 49ers, refused it, but ended up taking a 1 year $3M deal after his free agent market failed to materialize as he expected.

Michael Vick’s concussion heard around the world apparently wasn’t the only QB concussion of note last week.  Apparently 49ers QB Alex Smith suffered one in the 2nd quarter vs. Dallas last week.  No one outside of the organization knew anything about it until Monday when Smith showed post concusstion signs.  The media didn’t even hear about it until Wednesday when Smith appeared on the 49ers offical injury report.

Colin Kaepernick the 49ers 2nd round pick received more reps this week in practice no doubt as a precaution to Smith’s injury.  But in typically Harbaugh fashion (which I am starting to love) he gave this answer today after practice when asked if Colin was getting more snaps as a precaution to Smith’s injury “Yes Colin did get more snaps this week”.  Reporters must hate him, as a fan I love him so far, just glad I don’t have to interview him everyday.   Will we see the battle of the 2nd round QBs in an epic superbowl rematch?
