As if Michael Crabtree’s ailing foot wasn’t enough today the 49ers announced Wide Receiver Braylon Edwards had surgery on his right knee the 49ers gave no timetable for Edward’s return. It does appear that the 49ers will have WR Michael Crabtree back in the lineup week 3 how much he plays is anyone’s guess. Edward’s was injuried on the 49ers third offensive play from scrimmage Sunday vs. the Cowboys after catching a 21 yard first down.
Those awaiting to see a healthy combination of Edwards and Crabtree at WR along with probowl playmakers Tight End Vernon Davis and Running Back Frank Gore will have to wait a little longer. 49ers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh refused to give up much but did characterize it as a “little procedure”. Best case scenerio for return in a case involving knee surgery look no further than Safety Reggie Smith who injuried his knee August 9th in training camp and returned to practice just before the opener (not that he looked good on the field Sunday or anything).
The 49ers have a bye week 7, if the team can hold together at least a 3-3 mark going into the bye they could be in good shape coming out of the bye week if Edwards can come back in a Reggie Smith like timetable.
In other injury news Fullback Moran Norris who played just 4 plays in the 2nd half Sunday was seen walking around in crutches in the locker room today. Although Norris said he’s fine, it didn’t appear so to local reporters. Rookie converted DE Bruce Miller is currently #2 on the depth chart at FB although the team would probably rely more heavily on 2 and 3 TE sets without the services of Norris.
*Update Per Eric Branch the injury to Norris is to his fibula and he has been ruled out of Sunday’s game*
**Edwards Update per ESPN Edwards likely to miss 3 weeks of action, tough blow to the 49ers http://espn.go.com/nfl/conversations/_/id/7001526/braylon-edwards-san-francisco-49ers-likely-3-weeks-source-says
