The time of year has come once again when the NFL preseason is coming to a close with the regular season right around the corner. This also means for gamers everywhere that the newest addition of Madden 12 is released! The new Madden game came out yesterday and I have played a demo of the game. True to its Madden form the game does not disappoint and has some new features that make the game more realistic. Madden 12 uses actual NFL Film’s cinematographers in order to produce accurate and realistic camera angles and shots. Cold and hot streaks by players affecting their overall rating in Franchise mode are one of the cool additions to franchise mode. My favorite Madden game is from the 1994 version on Super Nintendo because it was the one that indtroduced me to the Madden game. My brother and I would always play a Snow Bowl game between the 49ers and Giants which resulted in many shouting matches and controllers being thrown. The best part of the game was the instant replay. This being a game from 1994 the only plays you could review was passing interference calls. You had one review a game and the call was always reversed no matter what happened on the field. It was good for you if you were the defense but frustrating if you were on offense.
We all know the reality of the 49ers finishing with a winning record and winning the NFC West division is a long-shot. However with Madden games you can turn the 49ers back into their winning ways as you have full control over the team with team president Jed York nowhere to be found to mess things up. The 49ers overall team rating in Madden 12 is 77 and compared to the rest of the NFC West that places them as the second best team in the division (Rams: 78, Seahawks: 76 Cardinals: 70). The team ratings will get updated once you start playing and download the new rosters. One example is the Cardinals roster does not include new quarterback Kevin Kolb. The 49ers roster and the rest of the teams do not include any of their free agent signings. Updating your rosters is important for a true game play.
The 49ers player ratings are pretty dismal in Madden 12 but that makes it more fun to play as you turn around the franchise. The 49ers have five players rating at 90 or above: Patrick Wills (98), Justin Smith (92), Vernon Davis (91), Frank Gore (91) and Andy Lee (90). The 49ers do have 10 players with an 80-89 rating however with the rosters not updated six of those players are currently not on the team: Nate Clements, Joe Nedney, Aubrayo Franklin, Takeo Spikes, Manny Lawson and Eric Heitmann. Here are the players with an 80 -89 rating currently on the rosters: Joe Staley (88), Mike Iupati (88) Michael Crabtree (81) and Shawntae Spencer (81).
The most notable ratings for the 49ers are the 49ers first two draft picks Aldon Smith and Colin Kaepernick. Smith has an overall rating of 76 in the game which is around where I thought he should be. An 80 overall rating was what I was thinking. For speed Smith is only given an 82 rating which if you have seen him in the preseason he is more worthy of 87-88.
The most laughable player starting for the 49ers is quarterback Alex Smith. I guess the Madden developers went with the best QB on the roster which in their minds is Smith. If I were you I would insert Kaepernick right away and let the Kaepernick Era begin! Cast-off Smith to Bust Island something the 49ers front office should had done in real life. When you look at Smith and Kaepernick’s ratings side-by-side there is not much difference. Overall Smith has a 75 rating and Kaepernick a 70 rating however of the 17 category ratings Kaepernick only loses out to Smith in five categories. Those categories are awareness (this was the biggest rating margin with Smith having a rating of 72 and Kaepernick 46), throw accuracy (Smith received a 78, which is way off), throw accuracy short (ok, that is the one thing Smith does well), play action, and carrying.
