The 49ers and free agent wide receiver Braylon Edwards met on Wednesday night with no agreement. Other teams interested include NFC West rivals Arizona Cardinals. Edwards has been busy this week not only meeting with potentials teams that want his services but on Monday he was reportedly at a bar in Birmingham, Michigan and was involved in a fight.
Two of Edwards’ cousins that were also involved in the fight have been charged with assault after supposedly attacking two bouncers at South Bar located in downtown Birmingham with a fork and pocket knife. Employees at the bar said Edwards did not attempt to break up the fight but rather incited his cousins. Here is a statement from South Bar,
“Braylon Edwards was present and involved, but it’s an ongoing police investigation, so at this time, we don’t have any further information.”
I am sure GM Trent Baalke and head coach Jim Harbaugh were aware of the incident and its possible implications before the meeting. Let’s not forget Edwards is on probation because of a drunk driving conviction that happened in New York City last September. The 49ers know what they will be getting talent wise from the wide receiver if he signs with the team. I think the meeting was to hash out the terms Edwards is seeking and make sure Edwards is a right fit character wise to be a member of the 49ers.
Harbaugh already has one diva wide receiver in injured Michael Crabtree so bringing on Edwards along with his baggage and repudiation of not being able to stay out of trouble will be the top reason why the 49ers do not sign him. If Edwards does get charged with anything for being involved with the fight you can guarantee a suspension from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. With a potential suspension and Edwards’ past the 49ers will pass on the wide receiver. Free agent wide receiver Malcom Floyd is looking like the more attractive option for a deep threat receiver but even though the 49ers are talking with Floyd the Ravens are considered to the front-runners.
