Things are starting to pick up in free agency with a busy signing day for the 49ers and GM Trent Baalke. Earlier the 49ers signed cornerback Carlos Rogers to start opposite Shawntae Spencer. The 49ers filled another hole today by signing two-time Pro Bowl center Jonathan Goodwin away from the Saints. Goodwin will most likely fill the starting center spot vacated by David Baas but he will get competition from Adam Snyder.
Goodwin is a great signing that brings a six-year veteran, who was part of the Saints Super Bowl win two seasons ago, to the offensive line. At 6-3, 318 pounds Goodwin will be a nice force up the middle creating running lanes for Frank Gore.
Before today the 49ers were stagnant signing free agents to fill important holes. With Rogers and Goodwin the 49ers are showing patience can pay off. There is a report from ESPN that wide receiver Braylon Edwards will be visiting with the 49ers. We have heard and seen this before but with today’s free agent signings I would give it a 60% chance Edwards signs. He is seeking a one-year deal. The 49ers became more interested in free agent wide receivers with Michael Crabtree injured and they showed it with the team setting up a meeting with Plaxico Burress that was cancelled by the wide receiver.
