The 49ers and Nate Clements failed to agree to terms on a restructured contract to keep the cornerback in San Francisco. The 49ers will release Clements and clear $15.7 million in cap space. Considering the Texans are the front runners at the moment to land prized free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha the 49ers releasing Clements could push the team over the Texans by being able to offer a bigger contract with the extra cap space.
With the release of Clements it would be ironic to sign Asomugha. Clements was the prized free agent cornerback back in 2007 before he signed an eight-year, $80 million contract with the 49ers. Now because of Clements release it will enable the 49ers to pursue Asomugha more aggressively. The 49ers are getting rid of one big, and bad, contract to sign another big contract that if it were to happen would be a great signing in the eyes of the 49er Faithful. I am for signing Asomugha but we have been here before with Clements. I am crazy for thinking this will be any different?
At the time Clements was signed in 2007 by the 49ers he was like Asomugha in that he was at the top of everyone’s free agency list. Asomugha however is a much better cornerback in 2011 than Clements was in 2007. Asomugha is a shut down corner which is something Clements has not been in his four years with the 49ers with only 10 interceptions. The 49ers badly need an upgrade in the secondary and Asomugha, even with the high price tag, is the best option.
