Another free agent to be for the 49ers said he wants to return to the team for the upcoming season. This time it was defensive end Ray McDonald who despite not being a starter last year, and not recording a sack, said recently he wants to play 2011 with the 49ers. McDonald would be a welcome addition back to the defense as fellow free agent Aubrayo Franklin will most likely sign with another team given the weak talent available at nose tackle.
Having familiar faces on defense will help with learning new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s system as trust is already established and there is playing experience with each other on the field. The 49ers have expressed interest in re-signing McDonald and the only move I see GM Trent Baalke making in free agency on defense will be in the secondary. McDonald has potential to be a starter again for the 49ers and he will have his chance to prove to the coaches he deserves the starting job.
"Before we left, there was a good vibe amongst me and the coaching staff and the GM," McDonald said. "They said they liked the way I played and want me back, so I'm just going off that. I want to be back here. I'm comfortable out here."
