49ers Pursue Bears Center Olin Kreutz
Bears free agent center Olin Kreutz has been in Chicago the past 13 seasons and even though the two sides have been talking a new contract the 49ers hope to sign the center. The 49ers sent Kreutz a contract on Wednesday and although he has not signed a contract he did miss the Bears reporting day on Friday. The six-time Pro Bowl center would be a welcomed addition as last years starter at the position David Baas signed with another team this week. Kreutz has played in 134 consecutive games since 2002. With the 49ers recent troubles Kreutz would provide [...]
This post was written by Jared A Quan We knew early on that the 49ers had been touting Alex Smith as their quarterback for the 2011 season. Also we knew that Colin Kaepernick would be right there with Alex. Now the 49ers have released David Carr as some had suspected. So naturally the 49ers would pursue a third quarterback. Regardless of the high profile quarterbacks that have already been taken, there are a few in the background that could be scooped up to compete with Alex for the top spot.
49ers Out of Hunt for Asomugha, Joe Nedney Released
The 49er Faithful knew new GM Trent Baakle and head coach Jim Harbaugh would make their mark on the 49ers roster with free agent signings and releases. So far, at least to this 49ers fan, the marks they are making do not make sense. It has been reported by the NFL Network the 49ers have dropped out of the Nnamdi Asomugha sweepstakes. It is unclear why the 49ers decided to drop out especially given the fact they released cornerback Nate Clements that cleared around $15 million in salary cap space. The only reasons I see Baalke stepping back from Asomugha [...]
49ers Michael Crabtree Out 4-6 Weeks
Back in Camp Alex Part 1 Edition wide receiver Michael Crabtree showed up, ran some routes on the field during the first day and then sat out the rest of the player organized workouts with a foot injury. At the time I thought it was Crabtree being his normal self of not wanting to practice however the injury was serious. So serious that Crabtree will be out four to six weeks.
49ers Free Agency Update
49er players are reporting to training camp today with the first practice under Jim Harabugh on Friday. The 49ers signed all ten of their recent picks ensuring the full rookie class will be on the field tomorrow. First-round draft pick Aldon Smith and second-round draft pick Colin Kaepernick were signed to four-year deals with a club option for a fifth year. Other 49er rookies that signed are cornerback Chris Culliver, defensive back Curtis Holcomb, running back Kendall Hunter, receiver Ronald Johnson, safety Colin Jones, fullback Bruce Miller, and guard Mike Person. It will be great not having any rookie holdouts [...]
49ers Rookie Donovan Edwards
Our friends over at the Golden Bear Lair, a Cal Bears blog, have a post up about newly signed rookie Donovan Edwards who spent his college career at UC Berkeley. Check it out here: http://goldenbearlair.com/2011/07/25/undrafted-free-agents-jeremy-ross-and-donovan-edwards-set-to-sign-with-nfl-teams/
The 49ers and Nate Clements failed to agree to terms on a restructured contract to keep the cornerback in San Francisco. The 49ers will release Clements and clear $15.7 million in cap space. Considering the Texans are the front runners at the moment to land prized free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha the 49ers releasing Clements could push the team over the Texans by being able to offer a bigger contract with the extra cap space.
49ers in the Hunt for Nnamdi Asomugha
Every time I turn on the TV or click on the Internet there is news of the 49ers signing a free agent (Alex Smith), losing out on one of their own free agents (Takeo Spiks/David Baas) or in the mix to sign a top prized free agent (Nnamdi Asomugha). The latter is making the biggest news for the 49ers as it involves the best free agent available at a position, cornerback, the 49ers are desperate to upgrade. The New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers are reportedly the two teams at the top of Asomugha’s list. The Jets advantage is [...]
Frank Gore Will Hold Out for Contract Extension
We knew plenty of news concerning the 49ers would come out this week however not all the news would be good. Here comes the bad. ESPN is reporting that Frank Gore will hold out for a contract extension and not report to 49ers training camp. Gore’s threat to holdout will not end well for the running back and although I don’t agree with it I see his reasoning. Gore is a 27 year old running back and is fast approaching the old as mold category in the NFL and he knows this. The 49ers have not extended a contract to [...]
Takeo Spikes Done With 49ers, Signs with Chargers
This post was written by Matt Hamm Linebacker Takeo Spikes has played his last season with the 49ers and will play his 14th season with Chargers. Spikes bolted to San Diego after three seasons with the 49ers. Early in the off-season it seemed like Spikes along with Alex Smith were virtual locks to return to the team. Spikes did say the 49ers have called but that their interest is decidedly lower than the other teams. Before Spikes signed when asked if he thought his days were over in SF he replied “Yes, didn’t have a choice”. Spikes was 2nd on [...]
