Alex Smith’s in the Building

This post was written by Matt Hamm

The evidence is piling up; Jim Harbaugh’s words of praise towards Alex Smith are turning into actions.  The 49ers newest head coach Jim Harbaugh said that he expects Smith to be part of a group of players that will come to the team’s facility Friday.  Harbaugh heaped praise on Smith almost immediately after accepting the 49ers head coaching gig.  He even went as far as to say he thought that Smith could become a championship QB in the NFL (yes the same Alex Smith that has played for the 49ers the last 6 seasons).

The 49ers chose OLB/DE Aldon Smith with the 7th pick in the draft and while other teams reached for a QB or traded up to take a passer the 49ers stayed pat ending the day without adding a passer.  Harbaugh would become the third head coach since Smith was drafted in 2005 to coach Smith if he does return to the team.  Smith cannot be fully blamed for the 49ers failures in recent seasons but the lackluster play at QB has without a doubt been a huge factor in the team’s lack of success.

The 49ers have openly admitted to offering Smith a one-year contract to return for a seventh season with the team.  This can be viewed in a couple of ways, one is simply Harbaugh is telling the truth he thinks he can develop him into a starting QB and wants him on the team.  Another is the team isn’t confident they can acquire another veteran QB to act as a stop-gap QB while a passer they draft sometime later on is groomed.  Given Alex’s performance, lack of confidence, and the fans growing disdain for him many 49er fans are hoping the team is simply covering all their bases and will only fully cut ties with him when they have his replacement in hand.

With two more days of the draft left and free agency set to begin any day now 49er fans should know sooner rather than later who their next starting QB will be (and maybe who the intended future QB is).  Should be an interesting few days to say the very least.

What are your thoughts on Alex Smith and the 49ers possibly hooking up again?

Please leave the building Alex…A fresh start is needed for both parties!

Smith should remain and will be a great QB now that Harbaugh is in. He developed Luck and he will complete the process with Smith. I’m tired of the haters out there…I would like to see all the haters try to learn a new system every f*(^*ing year…I know I wouldn’t…If you’re going to hate, go be a Raiders fan…

So you bought an Alex Smith jersey when he was drafted…Just change the number to Aldon’s new one and you’ll be fine. It is one thing to like him when he was drafted, but 5 years later the man is a complete bust. Forget the excuses, Smith is a terrible QB. I’m not hating, it is just fact.

The reason why there is so many haters is that Alex Smith is not accurate at all. You can’t teach accuracy. A new playbook doesn’t mean you will be accurate. So see so many overthrown and behind the receiver pass. Alex Smith must go.

Lets be honest about last year: (a) coaching decision to start 2 rookies on O-line, killing any chance of a running game, (b) offensive scheme predicated on smashmouth football, never taking advantage of the skill matchups, (c) inability to play on either side of the ball in road games. Add key injuries at Center and RB, and you may have a recipe for QB futility.

Lets also be realistic about this year. There is a new coach, new system, and the team needs a QB who can accelerate learning west coast offense on the field. They will have to address this in free agency and that has nothing to do with Smith.

Alex handled himself well both on and off the field, despite an unbelievable series of front office blunders. If he sicks around through it then we should all buy his jersey.

i disagree that 2 rookie OL led to the stagnant run game cgun. that was all mike singletary’s predictable scheme working against the team IMO.

Stop blaming Mike S. Singletary was just an extension of Nolan. Alex is a terrible QB no matter who the coach is….6 years of excuses is enough!
