San Francisco 49ers 2011 Offseason and NFL Mock Draft

This post was written by Matt Hamm

2011 is an exciting offseason to be a 49ers fan, the team brought in Jim Harbaugh as the teams new HC.   Many fans including this one feel the 2010 version of the San Francisco 49ers could have and should have won the NFC West.  You could point to the lackluster QB play, sketchy pass defense or lack of a true sack master as reasons for the 49ers 6-10 record and you wouldn’t necessarily be wrong.  Those were all and remain issues for the team.   How the team addresses these issues will be very interesting to see.  Here’s my best educated guess on how I think things will end up when the draft concludes and the CBA dust finally settles.

Release/Don’t re-sign
Alex Smith
Troy Smith
David Carr
Demetric Evans
Moran Norris
Manny Lawson-(49ers attempt to sign him but demands are too high, he signs w/a 4-3 team)
Brian Westbrook

Nate Clements-($15M cap # this season, team and Clements cannot agree on a new figure and he is released)

David Baas-3 year deal
Barry Sims-1 year deal
Tony Wragge-1 year deal
CJ Spillman-1 year deal
Ray McDonald-2 year deal
Travis LaBoy-1 year deal
Takeo Spikes-2 year deal
Aubrayo Franklin-3 year deal
Dashon Goldston-1 year deal (predicting w/4 yrs service he will be RFA and sign 1 year tender)

Frank Gore-new 3 year deal (signed sometime during season after Gore proves he is still a top tier back after injury)
Josh Morgan-new 3 year deal
Delaine Walker-new 2 year deal

Parys Haralson to Mia for 5th round pick (Nolan convinces FO to trade for underachieving OLB)
Chilo Rachal to Sea for 6th round pick (Scott MClaughlin continues trend of obtaining 49er castoffs)

FA Signings
Nnamdi Asomugha-CB 7 year deal (similar to Clements the last 2 years would be easy to get out of for team) team breaks the bank again in their quest for a top level CB, by releasing Clements team trades one expensive CB for another.
Marc Bulger QB- 2 year deal, best QB on the market right now might be one of the least talked about options for the 9ers in Bulger. He’s healthy now and has received nice reviews from coaches and players on the Ravens it’s safe to say the 49ers new HC will have more info than he needs on Bulger from his brother the Ravens HC and I think Harbaugh #2 gives captain comeback a full endorsement of Bulger.
1-Carolina- Blaine Gabbert
2-Denver- Marcell Dareus
3-Buffalo- Cam Newton
4-Bengals- AJ Green
5-Arizona-Von Miller
6-Browns-Nick Fairley
7- SF49ers-Patrick Peterson- coaching staff cannot resist putting together this potential dream combo of CBs.

TRADE! w/NE, 49ers receive pick #17, NE receives 2nd, 4th, 6th & 7th round picks in 2011 draft, 3rd and 4th round picks in 2012 draft.
17- SF49ers -Aldon Smith OLB/DE Missouri-projects as OLB in NFL will be relied upon to be the team’s top sack master.

Revised: Rest of 49ers Picks after NE trade (left after trades 3,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,7) still 11 TOTAL PICKS (including round1 picks)

3-Ryan Mallet QB Arkansas- possibly the best pure passer in the draft falls to the 3rd  round in what could be a steal similar to the Browns selection of Colt McCoy in 2010.  Character concerns and mobility questions contribute to Mallet’s fall.

4-Sam Acho DE/OLB Texas- With QB and CB taken care of Vic Fangio gets his wish of 2 fresh OLBs to bolster the pass rush.
5a-Owen Marecic FB Stanford- Perfect FB for Harbaugh’s WCO

5b-Steve Schilling OG Michigan-competes with Snyder, Wraage for starting RG spot, provides option for future

6a-Pat Delvin QB Delaware- another developmental QB for Harbaugh to tutor

6b-Jarvis Jenkins DE Clemson- nice 3-4 DE depth behind Smith/Soap

7a- Da’Rel Scott RB Maryland- Westbrook’s replacement and possible change of pace back with good speed (4.35 40 yd)

7b-Blaine Sumner DT Colorado Mines-prospect and depth at NT

7c-Alex Henry K Nebraska- 24-of-28, converting 7-of-8 from 40-49 and 2-of-5 from 50-plus. Competition for Nedney

JB Shugarts OT OSU- character issues push him out of the draft…just like Alex Boone we take another flyer here

TJ Yates QB UNC- best undrafted QB goes to one of the best QB coaches.

Ryan Whalen WR Stanford- One of Harbaugh’s Stanford guys

Robert Hughes FB Notre Dame- Harbaugh now has 2 young FBs to choose from, should be a nice camp battle.

Darian Hagan CB Cal- local product brought in to compete for back of roster spot.
