Von Miller will Visit with 49ers

Texas A&M alum and Butkus Award winner Von Miller will be meeting with 49ers on April 13.  The nation’s top linebacker last year will visit with coaches and the front office while he is in the Bay Area.  Miller’s draft stock has risen significantly since the NFL Combine in March and he is expected to go in the top-ten in the draft.  With how highly touted Miller is right now it might be a long shot for him to be available when the 49ers select with the seventh pick.  The 49ers two biggest needs on defense are at defensive line [...]

At Quarterback 49ers Should Gamble in Free Agency

AUTHOR: | IN: 49ers, 49ers 2011, Draft, Fanzone/Tailgating, Jim Harbaugh, NFL, NFL Lockout, Popular, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: 5 Comments

The conventional wisdom as to why the 49ers can’t seem to get above .500 when finishing a season is they have lacked a franchise quarterback and had an inexperienced head coach.  The latter was settled, so we hope, with the hiring of Jim Harbaugh.  The former is stalled with the NFL lockout.  The lockout won’t be resolved by April’s draft which means the 49ers will draft with David Carr as the only signed quarterback.  If you are like me the thought of selecting another quarterback in the first round and hoping he develops into a franchise QB makes me cringe. [...]

Why Mike Singletary Failed

AUTHOR: | IN: 49ers, Fanzone/Tailgating, NFL, Popular, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: 4 Comments

After the final game of the 2008 season Mike Singletary had the interim tag removed by team president Jed York and was made the 16th head coach in 49ers team history.  At the time I was ecstatic about the hire especially with Singletary leading the 49ers to a 5-4 record after the team started the season 2-5 under Mike Nolan.  The motivation factor was there and we saw that in Singletary’s first game as interim head coach when he sent Vernon Davis to the locker room for a 15-yard penalty after slapping a Seahawks player after a reception.  Singletary followed [...]

NFL Lockout Compounds Trades for 49ers

AUTHOR: | IN: 49ers, 49ers 2011, Draft, NFL, NFL Lockout, Popular, Training Camp | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

Last week I made a post a few hours before NFL owners and players agreed to disagree with the NFLPA decertifying and the owners locking out the players that called for the 49ers to trade their top draft pick for Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb (Read here).  I wrote the post knowing the NFL was either close to an extension, a new CBA agreement or a lockout.  Wishful thinking had me hoping for anything other than a lockout knowing how it would affect the 49ers trading for Kolb.  A hearing has been set for April 6 with a federal court judge [...]

49ers Should Trade for Kevin Kolb

AUTHOR: | IN: 49ers, 49ers 2011, Fanzone/Tailgating, Jim Harbaugh, NFL, Popular, Preseason, The Bay Area, Training Camp | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

This time of year the focus for the NFL is usually on free agency and April’s college draft. With a new collective bargaining agreement being worked out between NFL players and owners, a possible lockout is getting most of the attention. Regardless of a lockout the NFL draft is scheduled as planned however newly drafted players cannot sign with their teams until a new CBA is worked out. All the draft experts, if you ask me there are too many, are in full mode with mock drafts which seem to change every day. I have read the experts say the 49ers should [...]

Countdown to Lockout: Which side are you on, Millionaires or Billionaires?

AUTHOR: | IN: 49ers 2011, NFL, NFL Lockout, Popular, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: None Yet

UPDATE:  “The NFL and the NFL Players Association have mutually agreed to a seven-day extension of the collective bargaining agreement, and the sides will resume labor negotiations Monday under the continued supervision of federal mediator George Cohen.”  Read more When it comes labor lockouts and sports, having to pick between millionaires (players) and billionaires (owners), I normally fall into the category of supporting neither.  I just want to see the sport played as regularly scheduled and how the players and owners divvy up what we the fans spend collectively on their product is not a concern to us.  No matter [...]

Should Harbaugh Bring Alex Smith Back?

AUTHOR: | IN: 49ers 2011, Fanzone/Tailgating, Jim Harbaugh, NFL, NFL Lockout, Popular, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: 5 Comments

Whether or not there is a lockout come Friday 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has one pressing issue, quarterback.  Come midnight on March 4 if there is no new collective bargaining agreement in place the NFL owners will lockout the players.  This affects Harbaugh in that he cannot workout players currently on the roster and there will be no free agency until a new CBA is worked out.  A lot of buzz has been made about Harbaugh talking with quarterback Alex Smith, so much so the NFL has threaten fines and loss of draft picks if Harbaugh and Smith continue [...]
