15 Years since 49ers Last Super Bowl Victory

Last Saturday, January 29th marked the 15th anniversary of the 49ers last Super Bowl victory.  I still remember watching the game in my grandma’s living room with my cousins who are also 49er fans.  A jumping huddle of celebration started after the game came to an end and the 49ers defeated the San Diego Chargers 49-26.  At the time I thought this would be the start of a string of 49ers champions and they would become the team of the 1990′s.  The 49er teams that finished out the second-half of the 1990’s were good however no Super Bowl appearances.

A lot has changed with the 49ers since their last Super Bowl victory, the most glaring being a change in ownership in 2000 and the 49ers downward spiral that ensued.  The 49ers are on an upward spiral, fingers crossed, as the York Family has now hired an experienced head coach that can lead the 49ers back to respectability.

Getting back to the point of respectability in the NFL certainly includes a trip back to the Super Bowl.  For the 49ers to get back to the level of an all-decades team, like in the 1980’s, that includes multiple trips back to the Super Bowl and winning championships.  The 49ers have a long way to go in both departments but something is striking about the other all-decade teams: They have made multiple trips to the Super Bowl winning seven Lombardi trophies since the 49ers last Super Bowl victory.

Here is a breakdown of past team of the decades:

Team of the 1960’s: Green Bay Packers

Super Bowl appearances since 1995: 3

Super Bowl titles since 1995: 1

Team of the 1970’s: Pittsburgh Steelers

Super Bowl appearances since 1995: 4

Super Bowl titles since 1995: 2

Team of the 1980’s: San Francisco 49ers

Super Bowl appearances since 1995: 0

Super Bowl titles since 1995: 0

Team of the 1990’s: Dallas Cowboys

Super Bowl appearances since 1995: 1

Super Bowl titles since 1995: 1

Team of the 2000’s: New England Patriots

Super Bowl appearances since 1995: 5

Super Bowl titles since 1995: 3

It is no coincidence the Steelers and Packers are in this year’s Super Bowl.  The Steelers have a legendary front office that is the envy of the league and have had three coaches since 1969.  The Packers are the only NFL team publically owned and always seem to make the right hires in the front office and the coaching staff and proven to be one of the bests in the NFL at drafting quality players.  The 49ers are the worse of the team of the decade’s bunch having no Super Bowl appearances or titles since 1995.

In the 1980’s and 90’s the 49ers organization was looked upon with great envy by other teams. However since 2000 when the 49ers ownership changed hands San Francisco is now looked upon by NFL teams as how not to run an organization.  The York Family is still in charge but took a step in the right direction with hiring of Jim Harbaugh and hopefully the losing ways are at their end.

Note: All three of the 49ers division rivals have been to the Super Bowl since 1995 with the Rams being the lone winner in 2000.
