Former 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan was hired by division rival Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday. McCloughan will be the senior personnel executive and he has history with the Seahawks having previously worked for the team from 2000-2004 as director of college scouting. While with the Seahawks McCloughan was an integral part in putting together the Seahawks Super Bowl team in 2005. The 49er Faithful know quite well about McCloughan’s success in assembling a good and deep roster. We only need to look at the current 49ers roster to see the impact McCloughan can make with a team. Even though he was not around for this year’s NFL draft because he was fired a few weeks before, the draft picks were basically McCloughan’s. 49ers draft GM Trent Baalke worked closely with McCloughan in developing the draft plan of filling important holes and needs.
What is the 49ers loss is the Seahawks gain.
“Not only is Scot a good friend, he is a proven veteran talent evaluator and an extremely loyal individual,” said John Schneider, the Seahawks’ general manager
49er Team President Jed York has still said nothing about the reason for McCloughan’s firing other than it was a “personnel matter”. I suspect York will continue to stay mum on the issue but if McCloughan’s firing truly was a “personnel matter” whether it was him or York it seems he has moved passed the problem and the Seahawks saw it as a non-issue. Any outstanding issues that were the reason for his firing would have to be resolved for another team to take a chance on him, right? However I think the “personnel matter” York referred as the reason for canning him had to do with York and McCloughan’s relationship and the fallout that ensued. McCloughan I think stepped on York’s ego in a way that was beyond repair. The timing of the firing, few weeks before the draft and in the middle of the off-season, and York’s evasiveness in his odd press conference all point towards the “personnel matter” being York himself.
