2000′s: 49ers Debacle Decade

AUTHOR: | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, NFL | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

The 1980’s and 1990’s were glory decades for the San Francisco 49ers after decades of futility.  The 80’s saw the rise of Bill Walsh, the West Coast offense and Joe Montana, ‘The Catch’, a Super Bowl win in ’81, a Super Bowl win ’84, the drafting of Jerry Rice, back-to-back Super Bowl wins in ’88-’89, eight playoff appearances and seven NFC West division titles.  After the ’88 season Bill Walsh retired and gave way to George Seifert and the 49ers dominance continued into the 1990’s.  Another eight playoff appearances, six NFC West division titles and Super Bowl win number 5 [...]

49ers D Impressive Once Again

AUTHOR: | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Gameday, NFL, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

. Off to a slow offensive start but a quick defensive start with turnovers the 49ers eventually pulled away from the lowly Lions and won 20-6 on Sunday.  The 49ers offense only managed 20 points off the defenses six turnovers but no mistakes were made by the offense and they were effective enough to put some points on the board for the win.  It was a meaningless game for both teams in terms of neither are bound for the playoffs but for the Niners a win pushed them one step closer to 8-8 and ending their seven straight losing seasons.  [...]

Nedney Doubtful for Sunday

AUTHOR: | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Gameday, Injuries, NFL, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: None Yet

Kicker Joe Nedney injured himself against the Eagles last Sunday suffering a strained left hamstring and is uncertain for the game against the Lions.  Punter Andy Lee can handle the kick-off duties but as far as field goals the Niners may have to sign a free agent kicker.  For a team looking to win out its last two games to finish at .500 losing one of our scoring assets in your field goal kicker makes the challenge harder against two mediocre teams.   Jed Joke Speaks Again:   I recently read the following article from Matier and Ross at the [...]

49ers Look Toward .500

AUTHOR: | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, NFL, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

The 49ers were officially eliminated from the playoffs with a lack of urgency and the need to win in their play Sunday against the Eagles. The best we can hope for from them this year is an 8-8 record and second place in the NFC West.  If anything we should not have been surprised by the Niners play on the road.  After the loss their record is 1-6 on the road, not very playoff like.  Their uninspiring play was doomed from the beginning of the game and the 49ers played like a 6-8 team and not a playoff team.  Alex Smith had [...]

Niners Ride 7 Turnovers to Victory

AUTHOR: | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Gameday, NFL, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: None Yet

. Regardless of last week’s result against the Seahawks last night’s Monday Night Football game was a must win for the 49ers.  If they had beaten the Seahawks and with the win last night the 49ers would have pulled within one of the game the NFC West title along with the owning the tiebreaker against the Cardinals.  The Niners are still technically alive for a playoff spot but in order for them to win the NFC West the Cardinals need lose their last three games (Lions, Rams, Packers) which seems unlikely but more importantly the Niners need to win to [...]

Rivalry Weekend in the NFL

AUTHOR: | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Gameday, NFL, Off Topic/Other | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

Major League Baseball and NCAA-Division 1 football have rivalry weekends that have in-state and/or regional teams play against each other.  In the MLB rivalry weekend usually happens during interleague play as most teams that are in-state or regional rivals are in different leagues.  In college football the last weekend of the season is reserved for rivalries and it has become known as Rivalry Weekend.  That got me thinking, why not have a rivalry weekend like the MLB and NCAA football in the NFL?  It is not often that in-state or regional teams play against each other in a season.  There [...]

Jed York the Next Great Flip Flopper

AUTHOR: | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, NFL, Rumors, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: 10 Comments

Two big developments happened this week in regards to the 49ers stadium plans in Santa Clara.  On Tuesday Santa Clara city officials voted to move toward a June 8 election for voters to have their say on whether or not public funds should be used to help the 49ers build a stadium in the South Bay next to the Great America theme park.  The other development, and reason why Santa Clara officials voted on Tuesday for the June 8 election, was the release of the environmental impact report.  In the report Jed York and the 49ers acknowledge that traffic and [...]

49ers Playoff Hopes Gone

AUTHOR: | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, NFL, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: None Yet

Say goodbye to the 49ers playoff hopes and hello to the off-season.  Technically the 49ers still have a chance and the last four games are must wins, especially on Monday night against the Cardinals.  However with the numerous ways the 49ers lost to the Seahawks on Sunday, their inability to win games on the road and the 49ers STILL unable to close out games for the win why should this team still be considered a playoff team? They are not and everyone not on the 49ers roster or apart of the organization believes that including me.  We were given hope [...]

Alex Smith’s Last Chance

AUTHOR: | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, NFL, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: None Yet

Most quarterbacks in the NFL don’t get second chances let alone a third chance to redeem themselves as a starting quarterback in the NFL.  The bust label has been applied to many drafted quarterbacks with most riding the bench on various teams throughout their career or they leave football all together.  This year we have seen Vince Young and Alex Smith get a second chance to be a starting quarterback with their teams in desperation. Alex Smith has had his ups and downs in his career and with the 49ers staying in the hunt for a playoff spot he has [...]
