GAMEDAY Week 8: 49ers vs. Colts

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Gameday, NFL, Rumors, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

San Francisco 49ers (3-3) vs. Indianapolis Colts (6-0)
Lucas Oil Stadium
10:00 AM (PST)
….
On a two game losing streak the struggling 49ers travel to Indianapolis to take one the undefeated Colts this Sunday.  The 49ers and new starting quarterback Alex Smith showed promise in the second-half of last week’s loss against the Texans that the 49ers offense is capable of sustaining multiple scoring drives.  The 49ers need a win badly but with QB Peyton Manning having another MVP type season and the Colts offense running on all cylinders the prospect of pulling off the upset is steep but if the 49ers come [...]

49er Flags

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, NFL, Off Topic/Other | COMMENTS: None Yet

Hello Niner Nation.  I was checking out some web sites for 49er flags and I came across are really cool company that not only has 49er flags but flags for all the NFL teams.  I received the Niners flag within a week of ordering and as soon as I got it I hung it out my window to piss off a neighbor who is Raiders fan and has a Silver and Black flag flying out his window.  I was searching other flag web sites and I found CVS Flags.com to the best for team flags and for pricing.  You get [...]

Alex Smith Named Starter Against the Colts

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Breaking News, Fanzone/Tailgating, NFL, Rumors, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: 4 Comments

Now I can see why it took Mike Singletary so long to make a decision in training camp about the 49ers starting quarterback.  Singletary named long forgotten and former number one draft pick Alex Smith as the starter against the Colts on Sunday.  In the back of his mind he probably had Smith as the starter all along but went with the proven quarterback Shaun Hill who is 8-6 as a starter for the Niners.  Singletary made the announcement yesterday on October 26.  Last year on October 26 in Singletary’s first game as interim head coach he pulled quarterback J.T. [...]

Texans Thwart 49ers Comeback, 24-21

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Gameday, NFL, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: None Yet

The San Francisco 49ers morphed into a new identity in the second-half of their week 7 loss against the Houston Texans.  The 49ers come out in the first-half looking much like the team that was humiliated by the Falcons in week 5 and looked as though they learned and adjusted nothing in their bye week.  The 49ers allowed another receiver to catch record breaking numbers although this time it was a tight end, Owen Daniels, who caught 7 receptions for 123 yards and 1 touchdown.  Texans QB Matt Schaub looked to Daniels often in the first-half as the 49ers secondary [...]

Recap 49ers First 5 Games of 2009: Defense Edition

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, NFL, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: None Yet

The 49ers defense has had its good and bad weeks in the first five games of the 2009 season.  In the two losses the D gave up a combined 854 yards and 72 points to the Vikings and Falcons.  In the three wins the D only gave up a combined 759 yards and 26 points against the Cardinals, Seahawks and Rams. The 49ers D has played well against division rivals but cannot seem to pull it together against non-divisional teams.  If the 49ers plan on being in the playoffs they will need to play better against non-divisional teams.

Terrell Owens Has Karma Issues

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, NFL, Off Topic/Other | COMMENTS: None Yet

The tornado that is Terrell Owens has ripped through San Francisco, Philadelphia and Dallas leaving all three locker rooms in disarray.  Owens has a thing for not only destroying a team’s chemistry as soon as he walks into the locker room but also fractures his relationships with the quarterbacks he has played with.  While with the 49ers T.O. basically said he thought quarterback Jeff Garcia was a homosexual.  His time ended with the Eagles after a string of incidents with quarterback Donavan McNabb and the Eagles organization.  After the Eagles Super Bowl loss T.O. said he “wasn’t the guy who [...]

Michael Crabtree to Start on Sunday

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Breaking News, Fanzone/Tailgating, Gameday, NFL, Rumors, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: 4 Comments

Rookie wide receiver Michael Crabtree (MCT) is expected to start opposite Isaac Bruce this Sunday against the Texans.  Crabtree will be making his first start of his career in his home state of Texas.  According to the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat MCT will in start in place of Josh Morgan who said, “I’m helping him learn my position and take my position. It is what it is. If he can help us win, I’m all right with that. They gave him my spot. So if he’s going to be in there, I might as well help him out so I can [...]

Recap of 49ers First 5 Games of 2009: Offense Edition

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, NFL, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

After the 49ers bye week the Red and Gold travel to Houston to take on the Texans in their week seven matchup.  Before we preview the week ahead let’s take a look back at the 49ers first five games and give grades for what we have seen so far from the offense.
Offense Overall (C-):
The run, run, run philosophy Mike Singletary wants to install has been stalled with the injury to Frank Gore and the ineffectiveness of backup rookie Glen Coffee.  The 49ers passing game is non-existent except when in the red-zone and passing to Vernon Davis.  One wide receiver, Josh [...]

Rush Limbaugh Dropped from Bid for Rams

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, NFL, Off Topic/Other, Rumors | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh has been dropped from a group of investors lead by St. Louis Blues owner Dave Checketts to purchase the St. Louis Rams.  With the Rams on a current losing streak of 15 games, and the recent demolishing by the Niners, I did not think the Rams organization could do any more self destruction but with the thought of Limbaugh being part of the NFL that is 70% African American they proved me wrong. Checketts did the right thing by dropping Limbaugh from the group not only because of his nihilistic political rants but [...]

49ers Need Help, Changes to Team

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Injuries, NFL, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

On Monday the 49ers released return specialist Allen Rossum who has been inactive the last two games.  Rossum did well last season for the 49ers averaging 26.8 yards on kickoff returns, one of which he returned for 104 yards for a TD, and 14.9 yards on punt returns which were both career highs.  He currently ranks 2nd in NFL history for total career return yards (14,987) and career kickoff return yards (11,931).  There was no official reason for Rossum being released but it does create a roster spot for newly signed rookie wide receiver Michael Crabtree.  What I do not [...]
