GAMEDAY: 49ers vs Chargers

San Francisco 49ers (3-0) vs. San Diego Chargers (1-2)

@ Qualcomm Stadium

Tonight, 7:00 PM (PST)

According to head coach Mike Singletary there are no meaningless when it comes to the NFL.  If you ask him all games are important regardless of whether it is the preseason or the regular season.  Despite Singletary’s thinking, much like the rest of the NFL tonight’s final preseason game is a very meaningless game.  The 49ers maybe have one or two players that they are unsure of if they should be given a slot on the 53 man roster.  Basically the players Singletary will be looking at are third stringers.  Regular season starter Shaun Hill will play tonight but no more than 10 snaps or two series.  The same will be for the defense with the backups getting most of the playing time against the Bolts.

Why should I watch?

The question tonight is not will I watch but for how long.  I found myself watching the final preseason games last night so I think I will make it through the first-half of tonight’s game but with third string quarterback Nate Davis, and possibly QB of the future, getting most of the playing time tonight I might be intrigued to watch the second half to see how he does.  Along with rookie running backs Glen Coffee and Kory Sheets this might be a more exciting game than most people think.  Coffee and Sheets have been tearing it up against the Broncos, Raiders and Cowboys second and third stringers in the preseason.  We will see a lot of Coffee and probably Sheets in the regular season with the 49ers run, run, run style of offense that will try to wear defenses down to open up the passing game.  I would like to see Singletary take some chances if the opportunity arises tonight.  If it is 4th and 1 go for it! Time winding down before the end of the second half and we are inside the 20 yard line with less than 15 seconds to play, shoot for the end zone!  Singletary will be conservative in his big game decisions during the regular season and he has been that way through preseason, see Cowboys game, so Singletary needs to let loose for the final, meaningless preseason game.

Prospector predication

Most of the 49ers and Chargers first stringers on both sides of the football will not play or see a lot of playing time so expect a lot of mistakes as the rookies and veterans fight for the last roster spots on both teams.  Nate Davis should have a good game tonight and with the running duel of Coffee and Sheets leading the way the 49ers will finish the preseason with a perfect record at 4-0. 49ers win 20-16.  (Note: the Loins had a perfect preseason record last year).
