Not more than two days after being anointed the new starting quarterback for the 49ers Shaun Hill injured his lower back in practice. Hill only threw one pass on Wednesday but is expected to start against the Cowboys on Saturday. He returned to practice today although he only threw in individual drills. With Alex Smith already out for the third preseason game Damon Huard ran the first-team offense Thursday with rookie Nate Davis running most of the plays with the starting offensive after taking over for Hill yesterday. Huard will most likely start if Hill cannot go.
Hill first injured his lower back in 2007 against the Buccaneers in week 16 causing him to miss the last game of the season after taking over for Trent Diller and going 2-0 in his starts. With Hill back to practice on Thursday I have a little sense of relief but with his age, 29, and history of back injuries is a cause for concern. He has not played a full season under center so getting injured in preseason before you start to feel the real hits from opponents defenses makes me wonder if he should play at all on Saturday. Remember Alex Smith is our back-up quarterback if Hill goes down and he has not played since November 19, 2006.
Linebacker and tackling freak Patrick Willis will play in his first preseason game this weekend. He injured his Achilles tendon and ankle on the first day of training camp and has not played at all in preseason.
Do you care?
The Michael Crabtree missed practiced count is at 38. Even if he does sign with the 49ers I hope he doesn’t play at all this season and rides the bench.
