49ers Beat Cowboys 20-13

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Gameday, NFL, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: None Yet

The 49ers traveled to Dallas on Saturday to play in Jerry Jones’ new billion dollar stadium.   No punts hit the video board during the game but here are some things that I noticed:
Pass rush: The 49ers seem to have gone nowhere in the pass rushing department compared to last year and the game against the Cowboys really showed the pass rush still has a long way to go.   It seemed like Tony Romo had 4-5 seconds to find and throw to a receiver on every pass attempt.   The secondary made some plays to make up for the lack of [...]

Crabtree, 49ers $7 Million Apart on Contract

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: NFL, Rumors, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: 6 Comments

Former 49ers cornerback and KPIX radio announcer Eric Davis is reporting the 49ers and Michael Crabtree are stalled in negotiations and are $7 million apart in guaranteed money.  In Crabtree’s fantasy world he was picked seventh in the draft but in the real world where the 49er Faithful and the 49ers organization live he was picked tenth and deserves only the contract players picked at that number are slotted to receive.  Davis also reported that Crabtree is still willing to sit out the season.
“They feel as should they should get more than where they are slotted and that’s going to [...]

Shaun Hill Injuries Back, Expects to Start Saturday

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Gameday, Injuries, NFL, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: None Yet

Not more than two days after being anointed the new starting quarterback for the 49ers Shaun Hill injured his lower back in practice.  Hill only threw one pass on Wednesday but is expected to start against the Cowboys on Saturday.  He returned to practice today although he only threw in individual drills.  With Alex Smith already out for the third preseason game Damon Huard ran the first-team offense Thursday with rookie Nate Davis running most of the plays with the starting offensive after taking over for Hill yesterday.  Huard will most likely start if Hill cannot go.
Hill first injured his [...]

BREAKING NEWS: Shaun Hill Named 49ers Starter

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Breaking News, Fanzone/Tailgating, NFL, Rumors, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: None Yet

According to the San Francisco Chronicle Mike Singletary just announced incumbent starter Shaun Hill will be under center for the 49ers on opening Sunday September 13.

“I like the consistency,” Singletary said of Hill. “He has a commanding presence about him. When he gets in the huddle, the guys have learned to rally around him. Shaun offers a lot of leadership, and I’m excited about that.”
This was no surprise and I thought Singeltary would name Hill the starter but it was surprising he even had a QB competition after Hill basically was a big reason why Singeltary retained full-time status [...]

Time to Make Michael Crabtree Final Offer

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, NFL, Rumors, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: 6 Comments

The time has come for the 49ers to end the Michael Crabtree holdout by saying they will not over pay him more than what the number 10 slot in the draft usually gets and certainly nothing more than draft picks 1 through 9.  It has been reported GM Scot McCloughan is holding the line by not overpaying him but I think publicly this needs to be said by McCloughan.  The more pressure that is put on Crabtree the better.  If he wants to be a Niner he needs to end his selfishness and get into training camp before it ends.  [...]

Return of Brett Favre, Signs with Vikings

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Breaking News, NFL, Rumors | COMMENTS: None Yet

Brett Favre has returned to the NFL for the 100th time out of retirement.  Like most people I was really not surprised at all with Favre signing with the Vikings.  I have much deep seeded hatred for Favre because he tormented the 49ers for some many years when they were contenders in the NFL.  Favre will have one more opportunity to distress the 49er Faithful when Red and Gold travel to Minnesota in week 3 on September 27.  With Favre the Vikings are instant Super Bowl contenders with their running game, solid offensive line and their defense.  But who is [...]

49ers Training Camp Update

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Injuries, NFL, Rumors, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: None Yet

We have entered our 26th day of training camp of the Michael Crabtree hold out.  Seriously, if he is not signed by Sunday I say start trying to trade his rights away on Monday.  If Michael Vick was able to sign with a team I am sure someone will take him. Scott Ostler at the San Francisco Chronicle has dubbed MCT Michael CASHtree…ha.
LB Patrick Willis (ankle), RB Michael Robinson (groin) and CB Tarell Brown (toe) all returned to practice on Monday after missing a good amount of camp.  Most importantly Willis is back on the field.  It is no secret [...]

Game Day: Broncos vs. 49ers

Denver Broncos (0-0) vs. San Francisco 49ers (0-0)

7:00 PM (PST)

Bill Walsh Field at Candlestick Park
The useless games that are the preseason start tonight, but for the 49ers this game is important as Mike Singletary and his coaches try to decide on who will be starter under center for the Niner’s this year.  First up, Shaun Hill.  The incumbent quarterback is expected to be named the starter for the regular season and what he does tonight will cement his status.  Alex Smith is expected to run the first team offense tonight as well but Singletary has said the amount [...]

Shaun Hill to Start Against the Broncos

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Gameday, NFL, Rumors, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

Mike Singletary named Shaun Hill the starting quarterback for the opening preseason game for the 49ers.  The competition between Hill and Alex Smith has been a close one throughout camp.  I would not read too much into Hill being named the starter because Smith will likely start the next preseason game against the Raiders.  Each man will get snaps with the first team offense to show why he should lead the Niner’s under center.  Now is your time to shine Hill.

Crabtree Will Play in Sept. Not to Miss Pay Check

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Gameday, NFL, Rumors, The Bay Area | COMMENTS: None Yet

The 49ers GM Scot McCloughan and unsigned draft pick Michael Crabtree are still far apart.  When asked about any updates McCloughan simply said “Nothing, nada.”  It has been reported both sides have drawn lines in the sand, so to speak, with each sides concessions.  Yesterday on Comcast Sports Net Bay Area it was reported that Crabtree and his agent do not want to have a long holdout. Good, right?  Nope.  According to his agent he does not want to miss a pay check so he wants to end the holdout sometime before the first game of the season:

I am going [...]
