Agreed. The 49ers did miss out on opportunities to draft a good O-lineman but with Crabtree still available at the tenth pick and with the aging Isaac Bruce as our number one receiver I was happy with them going with a WR with their first pick in the draft. Newly signed Marvel Smith should be able to hold down the right tackle position but he has had recent injuries most notably with his back. Overall I think the starting O-line is in good shape: LT Joe Staley, LG David Baas, C Eric Heitmann, RG Chilo Rachal and RT Marvel Smith.

Where the 49ers might get into trouble is their back-ups to the starters. The only reliable and proven back-up is Adam Snyder but he is at the right tackle position and will most likely give Smith rest throughout the season and replace him if he gets hurt. The 49ers might find themselves in trouble like with the corner back situation when Walt Harris was hurt and out for the season and then trying to find an adequate replacement. This will be harder for the 49ers to do on the line from now until the end of the season. Cross your fingers and hope for limited injuries to the O-line.

One other thing to look for in training camp and beyond in 2009.
WILL THE NINERS O-LINE IMPROVE? Unfortunately, this was a glaring omission during the draft, and a regrettable mistake considering the depth of talented offensive linemen available. Unless we cut down on 55 sacks, neither Gore, Hill, nor Crabtree can do it all and we'll wind up 4-12 instead of 9-7 against a tough schedule this year.
