General Manager Scot McCloughan wasted no time bringing in a replacement cornerback for the injured Walt Harris who tore his right ACL on Tuesday. The 49ers signed 10-year veteran Dre’ Bly to be the possible starter at right cornerback. Bly, who is 32 years old, brings a lot of experience to the team. He spent the last two years playing opposite Champ Bailey with the Broncos. Before that was with the Loins from 2003-2006 and with the Rams where he played with Isaac Bruce from 1999-2002. Bly is a great signing because his experience and professionalism will help not only [...]

49ers sign Veteran Dre’ Bly
An injury to starting right cornerback Walt Harris that was called “nothing major” by the 49ers is now something major. Harris tore his ACL in his right knee while covering wide receiver Dominic Zeigler in practice on Tuesday. Harris may not be out for the season as he could be fully recovered at some point in the 2009 season but given Harris’ age, 34, and the seriousness of the injury he is most likely done for the season. The 49ers are now in trouble at right corner as the secondary is coming off a bad season. Third year corner Tarell [...]
Santa Clara city officials signed off on a deal Tuesday night to build a 68,500 seat stadium 37 miles away from San Francisco for the 49ers. This is the first step in a long process but the fact that the first step has been taken shows the York Family are serious about moving the team to their team headquarters in Santa Clara. The next step is an environmental impact review and then Santa Clara residents get to vote whether or not the city should help fund a new stadium. The vote will not come up until March 2010. The stadium [...]
A couple of players got banged up at the 49ers voluntary OTA practice going on from Monday through Thursday. Most notably was corner back Walt Harris who suffered a sprained right knee. It was reported that Harris was on the field for several minutes as he was examined by trainers. He did not practice the rest of the day. The Niners are short in the CB department with Tarell Brown and Shawntae Spencer as the backups. Spencer missed 14 games last year because of surgery on his knee. GM Scott McCloughan did not sign or draft a CB to beef [...]

Shaun Hill vs Alex Smith
Last year’s man under center Shaun Hill has to be wondering what he has to prove to be named the starter outright. In 2007 after Alex Smith and Trent Dilfer went down with injuries the next man on the roster was Hill. In a December 2007 game against the Vikings Hill came in to replace Dilfer who was knocked out with a concussion. At that point in the game the 49ers offense was non-existent. I attended the game and I remember being more worried about how I was going to get my next beer the outcome of the game. Then [...]
The 49ers quarterback competition is well under way as incumbent starter Shaun Hill and former number one draft pick Alex Smith showed up to voluntary minicamp this past weekend. Even though neither was obligated to show up both felt they needed to in order to win the starting job. This shows great leadership from both and I believe Hill deserves the starting job because of his 7-3 record as a starter. Smith is still recovering from right shoulder injury which he has had two surgeries since he first injured the shoulder on September 30, 2007 against the Seahawks. Rookie QB [...]
Rookies Report to Minicamp
All seven of the 49ers recent draft picks report to rookie minicamp this weekend. Mike Singletary and company will get their first chance to see what the new rookies are made of. Everyone but WR Michael Crabtree who is out with a fractured left foot will participate in drills. Mostly the new 49er players will be learning the playbook on either offense or defense.
Mandatory minicamp for the team is June 5-7.
The 49ers signed 12 rookie free agents Thursday and they will also participant in minicamp this weekend: QB Kirby Freeman, Baylor, RB Kory Sheets, Purdue, WR Dobson Collins, Gardner-Webb, C/G [...]
