2009 NFL Draft

The week of the NFL 2009 Draft is here. Soon we will no longer have to listen to ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. or anyone else on that network or on any NFL related web site about who they think the 49ers will take with the 10th pick. I get a headache from reading all of the various “experts” and who they think the Niners will pick. I have heard everyone from Matt Stafford who the Lions will most likely take with the first pick to defensive tackle B.J. Raji. Remember people there are nine other teams with the same needs as the 49ers that will pick before them. What it will come down to for Mike Singletary and GM Scot McCloughan is the best player available on the draft board. Evidence of this is how many different prospects have come to visit the 49ers: QB’s Stafford and Mark Sanchez, linebacker Aaron Maybin, WR’s Michael Crabtree and Jeremy Maclin, tackles Andre Smith and Michael Oher, defensive tackle B.J. Raji, defensive ends Robert Ayers and Everette Brown.

All of those players are at positions the 49ers could use an upgrade. I still stand by the need of a WR to be taken with the 10th pick so long as Crabtree or Maclin are available. Either one of those players have a good chance of being on the field as a starter the first game of 2009. Imagine wider receiver threats of Isaac Bruce, Josh Morgan, Brandon Jones and one of the above mentioned receivers. This eases the need of a QB, for now, because it would give Shaun Hill multiple options and make the opponents defense account for more than one receiver on each play and not focus only on stopping Frank Gore. The 49ers did give up 55 sacks so an upgrade at tackle is also needed however the recent signing of Marvel Smith is suffice to fill that need for the next year or two. And a tackle can be taken in the second or third round same with a defensive lineman.

Side Note: One of my first posts for this web site was last year leading up to the draft. I called for DeSean Jackson to be drafted…how did he turn out for the Eagles last year? Anyone remember what he did to the 49ers in week 6 last year?

Needs: Playmaking wide receiver, tackle who can block, defensive lineman who can make a sack.
