AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: 49ers | COMMENTS: None Yet

I know you all have been waiting for this. The 49ers released their 2009 preseason schedule with dates and times still to be determined. Hooray for useless games!
Broncos @ Bill Walsh Field at Candlestick Park
Raiders @ Bill Walsh Field at Candlestick Park
Cowboys @ Dallas Cowboys Stadium, Jerry Jones’ new billion dollar stadium
Chargers @ Qualcomm Stadium, Dean Spanos’ billion year old stadium
The 49ers also announced the signing of free-agent tackle Marvel Smith who has started 108 games at right tackle with the Steelers since he was drafted in 2000.  Smith however has missed 14 games the last two seasons because of [...]

Hamstring Hill

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: 49ers | COMMENTS: None Yet

When the 49ers reported to mini-camp this last weekend they saw a hard to miss 45 foot grass hill at the end of the practice field. Coach Mike Singletary put in the hill as a conditioning program for the players during workouts. Offensive lineman David Bass has dubbed it “Hamstring Hill”. Although it was not ready for mini-camp drills this past weekend it stands at 15 feet high and has a 30 and 40 degree inclines on each side. Singletary invoked the inspiration of the off season workouts of legends Walter Payton and Jerry Rice who were both known for [...]

Niner Update

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: 49ers | COMMENTS: None Yet

Back from Spring Training. Great time watching the Giants, Angels, A’s and Cubs. Watched the Giants get beat down 8-2 and saw Juan Riviera of the Angels hit a grand slam. Good times with good friends.
Not much has gone on with the 49ers in the last week. Jay Cutler rumors are flying but that also includes about 15 other teams. The 49ers had free agent Marvel Smith of the Steelers in for a visit yesterday. Smith is a right tackle which the 49ers need to upgrade with Jonas Jennings, Adam Snyder and Barry Sims holding down the position last year. [...]

Spring Training 2009

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: 49ers | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

I am headed to spring training in Scottsdale, AZ to catch some sun, fun and baseball. Friday I will attend the Cubs-Angels game and Saturday the Giants-A’s game. The Giants ( I am a huge fan, of course) are crushing the ball leading the Cactus League with 24 home runs. I know it is only exhibition baseball but when you describe the type of team the Giants are, you don’t say they are a power hitting team. I will be back next week with 49er updates.

Alex Smith Restructures Deal to Stay with 49ers

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Breaking News | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

“I feel I have unfinished business here,” Alex Smith said. “I feel I have a lot to prove to myself, to the organization, to my teammates, to the fans to become the player I set out to become.”
Former No. 1 draft pick Alex Smith has restructured his contract to stay in San Francisco and compete for the starting job at quarterback. Smith signed a two-year deal that will pay him $4 million a year. That is a significant difference from the $9.63 million Smith was due to make this year.
“It’s kind of a fresh attitude. I feel like I get [...]

GM Scot McCloughan said “We don’t close any doors” in reference to signing Terrell Ownes. Don’t go there. Bad idea.

49ers Sign Two Free Agents

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Breaking News | COMMENTS: None Yet

Veteran free agent QB Damon Huard signed with the 49ers yesterday. As mention in the previous post Huard will be used as a back-up and is not expected to compete for the starting job with incumbent QB Shaun Hill and Alex Smith. Huard was with the Chiefs the last five years and appeared in five games last year going 50 of 81 in completions for 477 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions.
The Niners also signed defensive end Demetric Evans who played with the Redskins last year. He signed a two year deal worth $3.8 million. Evans will be a [...]

Kurt Warner Resigns with Cardinals

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Breaking News, Rumors | COMMENTS: None Yet

Kurt Warner signed a two-year to stay with the Cardinals after visiting the 49ers earlier in the week. No surprise here. The 49ers said they did not offer a contract but sources have said they did offer a contract and it was more than what Warner signed to stay in Arizona.
Former Chiefs quarterback Damon Huard made a visit to 49ers headquarters on Wednesday. If signed I doubt he would be competing with Shaun Hill and Alex Smith for the starting job next year. His role would be as a veteran back-up.
Free agent defensive end Demetric Evans made a trip to [...]

Seahawks Sign T.J. Houshmandzadeh

AUTHOR: Eric Melendez | IN: Breaking News | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Seahawks signed the best wide receiver in free agency this year, T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Housh signed a five-year, $40 million deal. Your 49ers were not in discussions at all to sign the former Bengal. In a recent post I said the 49ers should sign Housh just to keep him from going to a division rival. We need a number one receiver which will not be newly signed WR Brandon Jones. With Housh off the market the 49ers still have options in free agency along with the draft. But don’t expect the Niners to sign another WR better than Jones. They [...]
