Today marked the first time an offensive coordinator was interviewed by the red and gold. The potential call player is Clyde Christensen who has been the Colts wide receivers coach since 2002. I am sorry, Clyde who? He does have one year of play calling experience with the Buccaneers in 2001 and he has coached great wide receivers in Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne and Anthony Gonzalez, but the 49ers have no one near the caliber of those receivers and they obviously don’t have a Peyton Manning throwing to them. Christensen was a QB in college at North Carolina and was a college assistant coach from 1979-1995 at eight different universities. He moved up to the NFL ranks in 1996 as an assistant coach with the Bucs. He may be good at developing receivers but we need an experience play caller that has had success in the past. No, thanks.
Rathman Rejoins Niners
Legendary fullback Tom Rathman was hired as the 49ers running backs coach. It will be his second stint as a running backs coach with the 49ers. He had the same position from 1996-2002. Since 2003 he has been with the Lions and most recently the Raiders. Rathman was talked about as a possible candidate for offensive coordinator but he has no previous experience. Good call to bring him in as the running backs coach. The 49ers will need him as they only have Frank Gore as the only reliable RB on the roster and the 49ers have no real fullback on the team. It will be great to see Rathman on the sidelines next season.
