Mike Singletary was quoted recently as saying he would like to have a new offensive coordinator “as soon as possible”. Hiring a new offensive coordinator quickly is essential however Singletary should take his time searching for the 49ers next offensive play caller. First, this is his first significant hire and he has said he wants someone with the same offensive philosophy which is run, run, run all over the opponent. Mike Martz clearly was not that type of coordinator which lead to his firing. Second, whomever is hired will be the 49ers seventh offensive coordinator in the last seven years. The last six years have been losing seasons. While it is hard to predict how long a coordinator will stay on a team, especially if he is successful, Singletary should look for a candidate that will be there more than just one or two years. Coaching stability is key to any team especially when they are building towards the future which the Red and Gold have been doing for the last six years.
It has been reported Singletary is interested in former Rams head coach Scott Linehan. Other than the fact that Linehan is a former Rams coach (like Martz) he might be a good fit. Linehan has been an offensive coordinator in both college and the NFL. He was a play caller at University of Idaho, University of Washington and at Louisville. In the NFL he served as the Vikings and Dolphins coordinator. Linehan has experience so him being hired would be a good one.
Tom Rathman has also been mentioned as a candidate. As many of you know Rathman’s services to the 49ers is legendary. He was a fullback from 1986-1993 winning two Super Bowls and as a running backs coach during the Steve Mariucci era from 1997-2002. He is currently the Raiders running back coach. I would love to see a former 49er great calling plays for the Red and Gold but I do not think someone with no experience as an offensive coordinator should be hired. See former 49er play caller Jim Hostler.
Singletary said by the end of the week he will make public his list of candidates. Here’s to hoping the first year head coach picks the right candidate.
Side note: Norv Turner was rumored to be in-line for the 49ers offensive coordinator position before the Chargers made the playoffs because it was almost certain he was going to be fired. After last week’s performance against the Colts I don’t think that is the case anymore especially if the Bolts beat the Steelers.
