49ers Fire Mike Nolan

Head Coach Mike Nolan was fired by the Joke (York) family yesterday. He will be replaced by Assistant Head Coach Mike Singletary on an interim basis. I do agree with the firing but it is too little too late for the 2008 season. Nolan should have been fired during the off-season but the Joke family, always a few steps behind in decision making, decided to bring him back to…well, not win, but to…I don’t exactly know what he was brought back to do. Like Nolan before he was hired, Singletary has no previous head coaching experience and he has been interviewed for coaching positions in the NFL and college. The other option, and maybe better, would have been Mike Martz only because he has coaching experience. However I do agree with naming Singletary the head coach mainly because his strongest impact on players is his inspiration and motivation he provides. He also commands respect from his players. The 49ers on offense and defense need all the inspiration and motivation they can find to help them limp out of the horrendous first half of the season that at best will leave them with a 3-5 record if they beat the Seahawks this weekend.

Who’s Next?

Some form of change needs to come under center and what better time than now with the 49ers already in transition. J.T. O’ Sullivan has clearly shown he is not capable of being starting quarterback. Martz trusts O’Sullivan with the starting job mostly because he knows the system better. But at this point something needs to be done. Shaun Hill has shown he can manage a football game and hold onto the football as he did well leading the 49ers at the end of last season. Grant it, it was the end of the season, the teams the Niner’s played had no film on Hill and what his weak spots are, but just as much a change in head coach was needed, the 49ers need a change under center as well.

If only the Joke family could fire themselves. This is where the 49ers organization needs its biggest change. The Joke family gave Nolan free reign and full control of the all personnel decisions when he was hired even though he had no experience in any of the categories he was but in charge of. As long as the Joke family are in the owner’s box this once proud franchise will continue to deteriorate much like the cross bay rivals Oakland Raiders, the laughing stock of the NBA Los Angeles Clippers and the MLB’s clueless Baltimore Orioles. All teams are suffering from incompetent owners who have no idea what they are doing.
