The 49ers lost to the Raiders 18-6 Friday night amounting 269 total net yards while committing four turnovers. It was the first preseason game but the only shining light was rookie WR Josh Morgan making six catches for 68 yards. The Three QB Stooges, J.T. O’Sullivan, Alex Smith and Shaun Hill, were all ineffective in the game as they looked like they are still at the early learning stages in Mike Martz’s offense. O’Sullivan started the game and went 5 for 8 passing with 71 yards and an interception. He looked his best when he connected with Morgan three times for 11, 22 and 20 yards. Smith was 5 for 9 for 51 yards with no interceptions. He led the team on a drive that finished with a field goal. Hill was 10 for 20 for 83 yards and an interception. None of the three looked any closer to grabbing the starting job making the next game against the Packers all more important. They are taking baby steps learning the 49ers offense, but the sooner a starter is identified for the season the better off the 49ers will be.
LB Brandon Moore Released:
Six year 49er Brandon Moore was released by the team on Sunday. Moore was most likely to be on the bench come the start of the season as he was behind LB Jeff Ulbrich on the depth chart and he was competing with off-season acquisition Dontarrious Thomas at middle linebacker. The move was most likely to make room for free agent Takeo Spikes who was released by the Eagles in the off-season and it is rumored he was scheduled to visit the 49ers headquarters on Sunday for a physical. I think releasing Moore will be a good move only if they sign Spikes who will give LB core tremendous experience as he is entering his 11 year in the NFL.
