Unrestricted free agent Larry Allen has incited to 49ers offensive line coach George Warhop he wants to play. The real question is does Allen want to play his 15th NFL season as a 49er. All off-season it looked as if Allen might retire because he had made no public comments about his future. When the free agent signing period began G.M. Scott McCloughan said the 49ers would not get into a high bidding contest for Allen’s services.
I agree with McCloughan, the 49ers do not need to get into a bidding war for Allen who can still be effective but is on the down side of his career. The 49ers have gotten everything they could out of Allen when they signed in 2006. He would be a great mentor to second round draft pick Chilo Rachal as he prepares for his first NFL season as a guard, but other than that I do not think he can make a big impact on the team. The 49ers need to see what Rachal is made of and if other starting guard David Baas can endured a full season as a starter. Allen would be helpful as a backup but I doubt he would settle for that role.
The 49ers are close to signing first round pick Kentwan Balmer which means he will be present on the first day of training camp which starts July 24. Other unsigned draft picks Reggie Smith and Cody Wallace are also expected to sign soon. No matter what round a rookie is drafted or the position to have all of the draft picks at the start of training camp is huge. It also limits the distractions during training camp which can break a team before the season starts.
